Tummy Tuck Surgery (Abdominoplasty, Umbilicoplasty, Mini Tummy Tuck) - San Diego, CA*

35 Procedures ( View All )

If you're tired of your muffin top, beer belly, belly pouch, or fat apron, consider tummy tuck surgery to remove stubborn, unhealthy visceral fat. San Diego, CA men and women choose abdominoplasty (one of the top 5 plastic surgery procedures in the country) to reduce the appearance of a protruding tummy. By tightening the vertical muscles and removing loose, sagging skin, you'll see a smaller waist and a firmer stomach. Also known as abdominoplasty, tummy tucks allow San Diego patients, especially those with a noticeable "bell shape," to reduce the appearance of a protuberant abdomen by tightening stomach muscles and removing excess fat and skin. If you're tired of sucking in your stomach with Spanx® or keeping your shirt on at South Mission Beach, consider the tummy tuck body contouring plastic surgery with triple board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Richard Chaffoo of La Jolla Plastic Surgery.

Before Surgery

Dr. Richard Chaffoo has the experience and the expertise to help you realize a narrower waist and a firmer stomach. At your complimentary consultation, he will share with you the options for producing a more flattering midsection. He will also discuss in detail what to expect with your San Diego abdominoplasty including:

  • Whether you would benefit from a mini-tummy tuck or a full abdominoplasty
  • The surgical technique specific to your anatomy
  • Both the size and the location of incisions
  • Recovery and the risks associated with tummy tucks

Surgical Technique

A tummy tuck is a safe and effective surgical procedure, taking just 1 – 2 hours for the mini-tummy tuck and 3 – 5 hours for the complete version. During your procedure, Dr. Chaffoo will tighten the vertical muscles of your stomach by pulling them closer together. Additionally, he will remove sagging skin. Liposuction is also an option to remove excess fat. Finally, he will place pain pump catheters to minimize any discomfort and shorten your recovery time.

All stitches dissolve, so there's no removal later. While scarring is to be expected, most can be hidden behind your bikini line. You will want to inform Dr. Chaffoo in your complimentary consultation if you plan any additional pregnancies. Most patients are cleared to return to work 2 – 4 weeks following their tummy tuck. You may consider getting a series of lymphatic massages to reduce swelling after surgery. Please talk to Dr. Chaffoo to find a good post-surgical massage therapist.

Some results of your tummy tuck can be seen immediately after surgery, including no loose skin, a flatter stomach, and a smaller waist. In 2 – 3 months after your tummy tuck, the swelling and inflammation will have subsided so you can see your final results. With proper scar care, the tummy tuck incisions should become flat and faded about one year after your surgery, so it can be easily concealed.

Expected Costs

A tummy tuck may cost between $8,950 - $12,500. A mini tummy tuck will be on the lower end of the cost range, while a full tummy tuck will cost more. After assessing your goals and body at the initial consultation, Dr. Chaffoo will be able to give you a more accurate price range. To help make all our procedures affordable, La Jolla Plastic Surgery can help you research and understand medical financing.

Tummy Tuck FAQs

Conditions Treated?

Natural aging, genetics, pregnancy, childbirth, abdominal surgery, or significant weight loss are just some of the causes that may leave you with loose skin, pockets of fat, and uneven stomach contours. A tummy tuck can help you if you have:

  • Excess skin that is loose, sagging, or creating an apron
  • Stubborn pockets of fat that resist normal weight loss efforts (diet and exercise)
  • Weakened abdominal muscles

Combining Treatments?

A tummy tuck can be included with several other plastic surgeries to create your best results. A body lift or after weight loss surgery typically includes a tummy tuck. A Mommy Makeover also includes a tummy tuck and breast surgery to restore the body after pregnancy and childbirth. The removal of small amounts of fat is included in a tummy tuck, but larger amounts of fat require a tummy tuck plus liposuction.

Potential Risks?

Tummy tucks are relatively low risk, especially when performed by an experienced surgeon like Dr. Chaffoo, but there are still standard surgical risks. The most common complications are a reaction to the anesthesia, infection, bleeding, loss of sensation, and allergic reactions. To minimize your risk, please inform Dr. Chaffoo of your full medical history, including past surgeries as well as current medications, supplements, and vitamins so he can tailor your procedure to your needs for lower risk and better results.

Nonsurgical Options?

A tummy tuck may seem like more than you need to achieve your physical and aesthetic goals. If that's the case, you may want to consider the noninvasive, nonsurgical fat reduction treatment called CoolSculpting®. However, CoolSculpting does not remove excess skin or tighten the abdominal muscles like tummy tuck surgery.
