Originally developed to help healing after surgery, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatments have become more popular since professional athletes began using PRP after injuries. New applications for PRP are still being found, but one that has been helpful for San Diego, CA residents losing their hair is PRP for hair loss at La Jolla Plastic Surgery. Triple board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Richard Chaffoo uses PRP nonsurgical hair restoration at his state-of-the-art hair restoration clinic to help his patients get thicker, fuller hair. PRP therapy for hair loss stimulates the natural hair growth in dormant hair follicles by injecting platelet-rich plasma (PRP), enriched cells derived from the patient's blood, into the scalp. Also known as PRP hair regrowth treatment or the vampire hair regrowth plan, PRP for hair loss may be used alone for patient's in the early stages of losing hair or combined with hair transplant surgery or follicle stimulating medications, like Propecia or Minoxidil.
"I truly had the best experience with La Jolla Skin! I was referred here by a friend who received micro needling and raved about how amazing her skin looked and felt after. This friend of mine recently moved to La Jolla from Beverly Hills and is definitely picky when it comes to all things beauty, so I completely trusted her recommendation. I had been wanting to do something more than just your standard facial to help the texture and appearance of my skin... acne scarring, pigmentation from the sun, large pores. I called to schedule my appointment and spoke with Jennifer who was SO sweet and helpful. When I went in for my appointment I have to admit I was a little nervous, but after consulting with Tracy I felt much more at ease. Nancy was the RN that preformed the micro needling and she too was amazing! She calmed my nerves and was just so so great. After having numbing cream on 30 mins prior to the micro needling I literally felt no pain or discomfort during the service. The machine is loud which sounds scary, but honestly it's nothing. My experience here was so wonderful and I look forward to continuing treatments with them. Highly recommend!!"- S.B. / Yelp / Sep 26, 2016
"Dr. Chaffoo is a great surgeon and is kind, gentle, experienced and has a great bedside manner. His staff (Nancy and Tracy) are equally as attentive and thorough. I felt safe and confident. I had my breast implants removed and a lift and a fat transfer to balance them. He did a great job. I am very happy with the results. I would recommend him to anyone."- S.E. / Yelp / Jul 25, 2017
"I just love coming here! Everyone that works here is not only extremely talented, but also very kind and welcoming. I've had microneedling, cool sculpting, vbeam, and a hydrafacial....I'm beyond happy with the results from each of these procedures! This whole team really takes time to listen to all of your questions and concerns, and patiently responds to each and every one. I've never felt like I was left feeling confused about anything, or that I had wasted my money on a service. I'm a client for life! Thank you all for being so awesome, I'd give you 6 stars if I could!"- N.R. / Yelp / Jul 17, 2017
"Very Natural Breast Augmentation, Wonderful Experience - Dr. Chaffoo is the utmost professional. I had a great experience with him from the start to finish of my surgery process, and continue to have a good experience. He is very attentive and caring, and I ended up with fabulous results from my surgery. "Great new experience - I went to La Jolla Plastic Surgery for Coolsculpting. It was a new experience for me but Dr. Chaffoo and his assistant Robert walked me through it and made sure I was comfortable through it all. I have already recommended them to several friends and I'm sure I'll be back soon. Thanks!"- S. / RealSelf / Jun 22, 2017
Before the Procedures
Since PRP stimulates dormant hair follicles, Dr. Chaffoo will spend time during your consultation determining the cause of your hair loss and determining if you have enough dormant hair follicles for PRP therapy to be effective.
PRP treatments take about 60 – 90 minutes with the scalp numbed by a local anesthetic. Blood is taken from the patient and is put in a centrifuge where the PRP is separated from the rest of the blood. The PRP is injected into multiple areas of the scalp where the hair is thinning. Most patients will need at least 2 treatments, spaced about 3 – 4 months apart to achieve optimal results.
Most patients feel some soreness and bruising up to a week after their PRP treatment, but this can usually be calmed with cold compresses on the scalp and over-the-counter pain relievers. Your hair may continue to shed for the first month after treatment, but this should lessen over time and with more treatments.
The timing of results varies in each patient, but in the first months after treatment, most patients notice less shedding and thicker hair. It may take about 3 – 6 months before your notice new hair growth. Dr. Chaffoo recommends that patients get maintenance treatments every 4 – 6 months to sustain their results.

PRP Treatment FAQs
PRP therapy for hair loss is best for patients who want to increase the success of their hair restoration surgery or patients with:
- Thinning hair, but not bald spots
- Women with thinning hair caused by menopause
- Dormant hair follicles
- Men and women with androgenic alopecia
PRP treatments can be used with hair restoration surgery to stimulate growth and speed healing. PRP may also be combined with a medication like Minoxidil or Propecia for thicker hair. Please talk to Dr. Chaffoo during your consultation about creating your unique treatment plan.
Since PRP uses your own blood, there is a very low chance of a blood infection or allergic reaction to the treatment. You should tell Dr. Chaffoo during your consultation about your medical history, including blood diseases, infections, and use of blood-thinning medication so he can determine if you are a good candidate for PRP therapy.
