35 Procedures ( View All )

Originally developed to help healing after surgery, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatments have become more popular since professional athletes began using PRP after injuries. New applications for PRP are still being found, but one that has been helpful for San Diego, CA residents losing their hair is PRP for hair loss at La Jolla Plastic Surgery. Triple board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Richard Chaffoo uses PRP nonsurgical hair restoration at his state-of-the-art hair restoration clinic to help his patients get thicker, fuller hair. PRP therapy for hair loss stimulates the natural hair growth in dormant hair follicles by injecting platelet-rich plasma (PRP), enriched cells derived from the patient's blood, into the scalp. Also known as PRP hair regrowth treatment or the vampire hair regrowth plan, PRP for hair loss may be used alone for patient's in the early stages of losing hair or combined with hair transplant surgery or follicle stimulating medications, like Propecia or Minoxidil.

Before the Procedures

Since PRP stimulates dormant hair follicles, Dr. Chaffoo will spend time during your consultation determining the cause of your hair loss and determining if you have enough dormant hair follicles for PRP therapy to be effective.

Procedure Technique

PRP treatments take about 60 – 90 minutes with the scalp numbed by a local anesthetic. Blood is taken from the patient and is put in a centrifuge where the PRP is separated from the rest of the blood. The PRP is injected into multiple areas of the scalp where the hair is thinning. Most patients will need at least 2 treatments, spaced about 3 – 4 months apart to achieve optimal results.

Most patients feel some soreness and bruising up to a week after their PRP treatment, but this can usually be calmed with cold compresses on the scalp and over-the-counter pain relievers. Your hair may continue to shed for the first month after treatment, but this should lessen over time and with more treatments.

The timing of results varies in each patient, but in the first months after treatment, most patients notice less shedding and thicker hair. It may take about 3 – 6 months before your notice new hair growth. Dr. Chaffoo recommends that patients get maintenance treatments every 4 – 6 months to sustain their results.

PRP Treatment FAQs

Conditions Treated?

PRP therapy for hair loss is best for patients who want to increase the success of their hair restoration surgery or patients with:

  • Thinning hair, but not bald spots
  • Women with thinning hair caused by menopause
  • Dormant hair follicles
  • Men and women with androgenic alopecia

Combining Treatments?

PRP treatments can be used with hair restoration surgery to stimulate growth and speed healing. PRP may also be combined with a medication like Minoxidil or Propecia for thicker hair. Please talk to Dr. Chaffoo during your consultation about creating your unique treatment plan.

Potential Risks?

Since PRP uses your own blood, there is a very low chance of a blood infection or allergic reaction to the treatment. You should tell Dr. Chaffoo during your consultation about your medical history, including blood diseases, infections, and use of blood-thinning medication so he can determine if you are a good candidate for PRP therapy.
